I’m Writing a Book With An Atheist

March 14, 2025

My whole life I’ve hung out with atheists.

Now I’m writing a book with an atheist friend, Tom Jump. Tom is a successful YouTuber with over 30k followers. It’s there on his YouTube channel that he debates Christians and other theists.

The book we’re writing together is about ethics, entitled,

Objective Morality Without God? A Friendly Debate Between an Atheist and a Christian

Naturally, Tom and I both think the other is wrong. Tom thinks morality is built into the physical universe. I think morality is given by God.

There’s a lot at stake in this topic. Establishing a basis for ethics is what determines human behavior, at least in theory. And human behavior is really what we’re all about, isn’t it?

The book will be available on Amazon later this summer. (March 2025 update: available now)

Below is an excerpt from my side of things:

One of the challenges of ideological debate is that there are judgment calls to be made . . . I hear God speaking in the heavens. But Tom accepts the material explanation of human nature and doesn’t hear God in the heavens.

Imagine two friends, Tom and Rick, standing together in an art gallery, viewing a painting. Tom interprets the work in one way, Rick in another. Yes, we can share reasons for why we see things as we do, and perhaps these reasons will influence the other. But at some point, disagreement is simply person-centered . . . To me, moral responsibility is a self-evident truth of human nature. Its best explanation is God. That’s me looking at the painting. My friend Tom, standing next to me in the gallery, disagrees. So be it.
